New page

In 1948, Reed received a Guggenheim Fellowship to compose a symphony for band in Mexico. He has said: "After hearing much infectious music in Mexico City, Curenavaca and Chapala, and reading Stuart Chase's Mexico, I decided to write a Mexican folk song symphony depicting a typical fiesta." He transcribed the opening El Toro march upon hearing it in Cuernavaca and bought the Aztec Dance from an ethnomusicologist who had collected Aztec folk music in the mountains. He used the chant from the Liber Usualis in the second movement, and incorporated a commonly played mariachi tune, El Son de la Negra, in the third. It has become his best known and most widely performed work, including performances with dancers, costumes and staging. Raised in rural Missouri, Reed attended Eastman School of Music and studied composition with Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and Arnold Schoenberg, among others. He taught at Michigan State University from 1939 to 1976, and since then has served as professor emeritus. --James Huff 05:01, November 22, 2009 (UTC) (from the program notes of The Claremont Winds, submitted with permission)

New page

Apollo Unleashed is the third movement of Ticheli's Second Symphony, which was commissioned to honor James E. Croft as he retired as Director of Bands at Florida State University in 2003. Each of the movements refers to celestial light. The composer has said that the finale's title and its "blazing energy" were inspired by the image of the powerful ancient god of the sun. The movement's bright sonorities, fast tempos, and galloping rhythms are tempered and enriched by one of the composer's favorite Bach Chorales (BWV 433). According to Ticheli, this sublime chorale "serves as a kind of spiritual anchor, giving a soul to the gregarious foreground events." Originally from Louisiana, Ticheli is Professor of Composition at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music. --James Huff 04:58, November 22, 2009 (UTC) (from the program notes of The Claremont Winds, submitted with permission)

New page

One of the most vigorous young composers in Japan today, Yagisawa writes a variety of orchestral, choral and chamber music as well as works for concert band. Focused on the shrine at the center of Machu Picchu, this piece portrays the peak of the Incan empire and its tragic encounter with the Spanish conquistadors. The three dominant ideas in this piece "describe the shimmering golden city of Cuzco set in the Andes, the destructiveness of the violent invasion, and the re-emergence of Incan glory as the City in the Sky again reached for the sun." --James Huff 04:53, November 22, 2009 (UTC) (from the program notes of The Claremont Winds, submitted with permission)

New page

The first of "three postcards" in this work is a musical vision of New York City's skyline, with its looming buildings and concrete canyons. From there, the melody takes us to an urban jazz scene at a typical NYC night club. The conclusion is a rowdy taxi ride through the heavy traffic of the busy city, ending with a return of the skyline motif. Sheldon has taught instrumental music in Florida and Illinois schools, has served on the faculty at Florida State University, and is currently concert band editor for the Alfred Publishing Company. In addition to composing for concert bands, he guest conducts all over the world. --James Huff 04:52, November 22, 2009 (UTC) (from the program notes of The Claremont Winds, submitted with permission)

New page

Gillingham has been called one of the most prolific and widely performed composers of our time. Based on a reverent hymn, this expressive piece carries an eternal message of faith and hope. The composer adds moments of drama via wind and brass lines that "break through like dazzling sunlight through the clouds." In addition to his post as professor of music composition and theory at Central Michigan University, Gillingham is an accomplished performer on keyboard and euphonium. Many of his works for winds are considered standards in the repertoire. --James Huff 04:51, November 22, 2009 (UTC) (from the program notes of The Claremont Winds, submitted with permission)

New page

This joyfully exuberant work suggesting a wild fling in a sports car was arranged for concert band from a set of orchestral fanfares by John Adams. Like other Adams works, Short Ride features the minimalist earmarks of repetition and steady beat, with a consonance of harmony. One of America’s most admired and respected composers, Adams was educated at Harvard and moved to California in 1971, where he was composer-in-residence at the San Francisco Symphony for ten years. His operas (Nixon in China, The Death of Klinghoffer, and Doctor Atomic) are among the most successful of our time, and his On the Transmigration of Souls won the Pulitzer Prize for Music and three Grammy awards. Adams is an active guest conductor with the world’s greatest orchestras and was recently named to the new post of creative consultant at the Los Angeles Philharmonic. --James Huff 04:49, November 22, 2009 (UTC) (from the program notes of The Claremont Winds, submitted with permission)
