Spanish composer Joacquin Rodrigo generated more than 180 works, largely for piano and voice but also for violin, cello, flute, and guitar. Having lost most of his sight at the age of 3, he wrote his music in Braille and then dictated it to a copyist, often his wife Viki.

Rodrigo described the Concerto de Aranjuez for guitar and orchestra, which premiered in Barcelona in 1940, as a tone poem depicting the Aranjuez region of Spain. Today's performance is an (unpublished) arrangement by Donald Caneva based on the theme from the second movement.
