This work portrays the experiences of a group of people who live underground and have never seen the beauty of the outside world. They are visited by the "man from the light," who tells them of the wondrous world above. Some of the cave-dwellers struggle against those who are interested, using chains to imprison them in the shadows of the cave. A few mount an escape and, after a noble battle and dark journey, emerge from the underworld into the Light.
