Foundation was commissioned by the City of Fairfax (VA) Band in memory of Ray Abell, longtime president of the Band and a dedicated arts advocate. The hymns Be Still, My Soul (played to Sibelius' Finlandia melody) and How Firm a Foundation are woven into the work, which was played at Mr. Abell's memorial service in 2006.
